And now for the most simultaneously ridiculous and awesome thing you've heard all day (unless of course, you've already heard it), I present to you: Paul, the oracle octopus. Paul, a 2 and 1/2 year old resident of the Sea Life Center in Oberhausen, Germany, has an uncanny knack for correctly "predicting" the outcome of German soccer games. Apparently he had an 80% success rate during Euro 2008 - only misjudging the outcome of a single game - but in this year's FIFA World Cup in South Africa, he has managed an impressive 6 out of 6 correct, including Spain's win over Germany on Wednesday, which knocked his home team from a spot in the final match this Sunday. To make his selections, aquarium staff present him with 2 glass boxes, each containing a delicious mollusk treat, and each emblazoned with a competing nation's flag - the first box to be opened is interpreted as the prediction. I've had a thing for the bizarre and crafty cephalopod for a while now, but this is simply brilliant.
Unfortunately, Paul's international acclaim has also been mixed with ire from fans on the losing end of his truth-telling tentacles - when Paul predicted a German win over Argentina, South American fans called for his execution - via paella. Like I said: ridiculous and awesome... Read more about Paul here.
